There are many different types of diets out here in the world for you to try. I used to think that dieting was only for overweight and obese people, but I don't believe that anymore. Practicing a good diet is important for everyone whether you are big or small. It's especially important for black people because poor eating habits for us tend to be in our bloodline passed down from generation to generation. My father's side of the family is from Lamar, South Carolina, and he grew up on eating foods such as pigs feet, hog maw, and chitlins. These types of foods were probably passed down multiple generations from when they were the only type of food available for us to eat, and provided to black slaves as the leftover scraps.
If there's one diet that I could really get behind is the Mediterranean Diet, which focuses highly on plant-based foods and healthy fats. But it also allows for eating fish and some poultry. As stated in a Mediterranean Diet article on the Cleveland Clinic's website, "Research shows the Mediterranean Diet can lower your risk of cardiovascular disease and many other chronic conditions". The previous statement is very important because the leading cause of death in the U.S. is heart disease, according to the CDC.
When you go out to eat, you can choose healthy alternatives such as Krave Juice and Smoothie Cafe in Chesapeake, which I've had on my list of places to try out. Krave has a wide range of bowls, juices, and smoothies for you to choose from; in addition to some paninis and sandwiches. I've eaten there twice before, and will definitely be going back in the future. Their Acai Bowl tastes great. It comes with acai (which are small blackish-purple berries), strawberries, banana, almond milk, granola, chia seeds, and agave.
As I write my Krave Juice & Smoothie Cafe review, I didn't know what agave was so I Googled it. Agave is a syrup or sweetener that's commonly used as a healthier alternative to sugar. But unfortunately, the following Healthline article explains why agave nectar is even worse than sugar and should be avoided because it's much higher in fructose than plain sugar. "Agave has a greater potential to cause adverse health effects such as increased belly fat and fatty liver disease". Going forward, I plan to avoid any food that has agave in it. Besides their Acai Bowl though, I also had their Inflammation and Joint Health cold pressed juice with was also good. It's comes with beets, carrots, ginger, orange, turmeric, and apples.
Choosing Krave is a much better and healthier alternative than going to fast food restaurants such as McDonalds or Wendy's. The staff there are friendly, and they were also all young black people. This is another example of a black-owned business that's helping the black community by providing jobs to black people. In addition, the Krave is also helping the community by providing that healthy alternative. There needs to be as many Kraves in our communities as there are KFCs and Popeyes. It's important for us to support businesses like Krave and Just Pic'd Juices so they will stick around and even have the opportunity to expand if they wanted to.
